Resigning and joining

When can I join and play for my new club?

Last checked on 18 October 2026

Short answer

If you resigned in April, you can join your new club from 15 May. You can even sign earlier with a memo date (15 May at the earliest): that registration goes through automatically if your resignation is valid. You are eligible to play for your new club from 1 July. If your registration is recorded by 31 August, you can play for the first team all season.

The timeline after you resign

  • 1 to 30 April: you resign from your current club.
  • 15 May: from this date you can join a new club.
  • Until 30 June: you remain eligible for your old club.
  • 1 July: your resignation takes effect and the new season starts. You are eligible for your new club.
  • 31 August: the last day to join and still play for the first team this season.

What is a registration with a memo date?

Clubs can register new players before 15 May with a memo date. The registration is only carried out on the chosen date, with 15 May as the earliest possible date.

It is a conditional registration: it only goes through if you resign from your current club between 1 and 30 April. If you do not resign, you stay at your current club and the memo-date registration is automatically refused. The choice is always yours.

A memo-date registration is separate from any agreement you make with your new club, even though they are often signed together.

How do you join your new club?

Your new club creates the registration request on the federation's digital platform, and you give your consent. Ask your new club what you need for this. To check that everything is in order, ask the club that filed the request: it can follow it up in e-Kickoff.

Joined too late?

If you only join after 31 August, you cannot play official matches for your new club's first team that season. You can play for the reserves, youth teams and veterans. There are a few exceptions:

  • in recreational football and minifootball the restriction does not apply;
  • for futsal clubs and teams the period runs until 31 December;
  • women players can join during the winter period (early January to early February) and play for the first team;
  • players with a paid-sportsperson contract (at least until the end of the season) at a club in the higher amateur divisions or professional football can also join during the winter period.
