How many clubs can you play for in one season?

Last checked on 18 October 2026

Short answer

In one season you can be registered with at most three clubs, but you may play official matches for at most two. In each football discipline you are assigned to one club. The only extra registration allowed is with a recreational football club. Two transfers in quick succession, within 16 weeks, are presumed to be a prohibited bridge transfer.

Registered with three, playing for two

This rule comes from the FIFA regulations and is also part of the RBFA's regulations. In one season you can be registered with at most three clubs. In official matches you may play for at most two clubs in that same season.

There are exceptions for international transfers between countries whose seasons overlap, and for contract players who terminated their contract for just cause or whose club terminated it without just cause.

One club per discipline, plus recreational football

In each football discipline, such as 11-a-side football or futsal, you are assigned to one club. On top of that you may also be registered with a recreational football club. So you can play competitive football for your club and recreational football on the side.

Note: this concerns recreational football within the RBFA (Voetbal Vlaanderen or ACFF). Many recreational and Sunday leagues are run by a separate federation with its own rules. Check with them which rules apply.

Prohibited: bridge transfers

In a bridge transfer a player is passed through an intermediate club, for example to get around the rules. Clubs and players may not take part in this. If two transfers of the same player follow each other within 16 weeks, the federation presumes it is a prohibited bridge transfer, unless proven otherwise.

Transfer ban

A club under a transfer ban cannot be assigned any new players from Belgian or foreign clubs, not even temporarily. For a ban imposed under club licensing, this does not apply to youth players who are not in contention for the first team.
